《The Next Movement》
Hong Kong’s First-ever Electronic Tap Dance Theatre Performance
Born in the era of slavery, Tap Dance used rhythmic footwork as a substitute for instruments, symbolizing freedom and identity.
Local Tap Daance company STEP OUT Studios will present Hong Kong’s first-ever electronic tap dance theatre production, 《The Next Movement》, at the Hong Kong Cultural Centre Studio Theatre on 21–23 Nov, 2025. This groundbreaking performance introduces custom-made “electronic tap dance shoes” to the stage, brought to life through a collaboration of experts in theatre, music, and art technology:
Zoe Chan & CAL – Founder and Director of STEP OUT Studios, Instructor, Professional Performer, Choreographer & Artistic Director of this theatre.
Chaklam Ng – Instrument designer and sound artist, responsible for the development and sound design of the electronic tap shoes.
hirsk – Renowned producer and live electronic musician, winner of the Best Album Producer (Instrumental) at the 32nd Golden Melody Awards.
Wong Chun Ho – Freelance theatre director, recipient of the Best Director at the 28th Hong Kong Drama Awards.
Together, they push the boundaries of dance and sound, transcending the limits of traditional tap dance to deliver an unprecedented theatre experience. Audiences will no longer be mere spectators—in the final act, they will be invited to become part of the journey, stepping into an experimental realm where sound and dance intertwine, co-creating a unique sonic adventure and imagining the future.
The performance revolves around three core concepts: it represents the dancer’s next physical movement, the next chapter in musical composition, and the next evolution of tap dance as an art form. Exploring the boundless possibilities of tap dance, the production features original music that guides audiences through different times and spaces, delving into the inner world of the dancers. It is not only an exploration of the performers’ struggles and aspirations behind their identities but also a profound inquiry into the meaning of existence.
